The Industrialism – The Great Bridge EP
Sirona Records is a French netlabel with some extremely hyperactive tendencies. They were founded in 2011 and already have over 500 releases pushed out in diverse genres related to electronic sounds. Their artist pool is equally immense, also releasing podcasts and mixtapes. Their release rate is short of overwhelming. If you can keep up with the massive torrent of new material you might be able to find a few hidden gems amongst their catalogue.
Sirona’s latest release [at the time of writing, they're already at 528], number 523, is a short EP put together by Brazilian producer Cesar “M1A1″ Alexandre. It’s actually a digital re-release, the original EP was released in 2011, and has now been remastered and its cover artwork replaced for the re-release. The concept behind the EP is a set of breakcore remixes of tracks taken from Shadow of the Colossus videogame soundtrack. If you never played the game, it’s about a lonely hero who must fight against huge colossus to save his beloved, the original soundtrack can be classified as neo-classical ambient of some sort. So, if you’re familiar with the breakcore genre, you can now imagine that the end result of this EP is somewhere along the lines of what Venetian Snares was doing in his Ross Cilag / My Downfall period. Classical sounds with pads and hymns that build you up to a higher / sacred state, and proceeding to batter you with exquisitely nasty and carefully twisted amen break decompositions.
This EP could easily be dismissed by the careless eye as yet another bedroom studio breakcore joke. Except that both sonic worlds, from the classical of the original game, and the breaks by the industrialism, really do fit nicely together and manage to move you into the epic realm of breakcore delight and junglist heaven. Which brings the EP some well deserved replay value.
